Vertigo was considered one of Kim Novak's greatest performances as the disturbed heroine, of which Hitchcock described himself as a 'love story with a strange atmosphere' -

On her role in Hitchcock's Vertigo – Novak said -

“What was interesting was that the scene reflected what I was going through at the time: it was the story of a woman who was forced to be someone she wasn’t.”

Circumstances being that as a result of which Novak was unwilling to accept the iron rule of the studios, which at that particular time did not allow any room for flexibility, and took the decision to retire from Hollywood prematurely in order to devote herself to painting and other activities, away from the Hollywood scene.
